World’s largest mining event kicks off in Vegas

LAS VEGAS — Thousands of people are in Las Vegas this week for the huge MINExpo International.

Like the gigantic equipment that will be on display throughout the Expo, this is a huge production that combines meetings, education and the heavy machinery used in the industry.

MINExpo, organized by the National Mining Association, is the largest mining event in the world. People from all over the world come together to discuss all aspects of the mining industry: exploration, development, equipment, productivity, safety, exploitation and much more.

MINExpo is held every four years, but due to COVID-19, the 2020 event was postponed for a year. The 2021 MINExpo, still feeling the effects of COVID, was less than half the size of a full MINExpo.

The 2021 event attracted around 21,000 people, but in 2016, MINExpo attracted around 44,000. This year, the number of visitors is expected to be around the same.

This year, more than 2,000 exhibitors will be present in the 1.4 million square foot Las Vegas Convention Center.

In some ways, mining is a slow-moving industry, but the pace of technological change is increasing and a lot has happened in mining since the last major MINExpo eight years ago. Many people say it’s an exciting time to be in mining — the price of gold has risen and while the price of some critical minerals has fallen, it’s expected that much more critical mineral mining will have to come online in the coming years. In addition, new technologies, including automation, promise many interesting changes in the industry.
