Woody Johnson: I spoke to Aaron Rodgers last night, he had no input whatsoever on firing Robert Saleh

Jets owner Woody Johnson says he and he alone made the decision to fire head coach Robert Saleh this morning, but he did so after speaking with quarterback Aaron Rodgers last night.

Johnson told reporters on a conference call that he and Rodgers spoke Monday night. Johnson said they did not discuss Saleh and that Rodgers, however, had no input into that decision.

Realistically, though, it’s hard to believe the owner would make that decision without getting a sense of whether the quarterback the team was built around would support the move. There have been indications this season that Saleh and Rodgers have been at odds. From an awkward encounter on the sideline to Saleh’s comments about Rodgers’ cadence, some had concluded that all was not well between the head coach and the starting quarterback. Even if Rodgers and Johnson hadn’t specifically discussed Saleh’s future, if Rodgers had indicated that all was not well with the team’s direction, that could have pushed Johnson toward this morning’s decision.

We’ll have to find out tomorrow what Rodgers wants to say publicly about Saleh’s dismissal. We may never find out what Rodgers said to Johnson in private.
