    Wind ‘slightly better’, chance of rain

    In addition to the weaker wind and higher humidity on Monday, there may also be a small chance of rain twice this week.

    Emergency crews battling the Davis Fire will get some relief from the weather conditions Monday as the wildfire continues to rage south of Reno.

    “Conditions are going to be a little bit better today compared to yesterday,” said Hector Crespo, chief meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Reno. “Humidity is also expected to be a couple (of percentage points) higher.”

    The weather service expects winds to peak at 20 to 25 mph between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. The wind speed is lower than Sunday’s warning of 30 mph. As a result, the Davis fire had doubled in size by the end of the day, from more than 30,000 acres to 6,500 acres.

    Relative humidity is also expected to be higher, at 15% to 17%. Sunday was drier and more conducive to wildfire spread, with relative humidity at 12% to 15%.

    According to Crespo, there may also be a small chance of rain in the region in a few days.

    “We are expecting a 10-20% chance (of rain) for the Sierra Front and Tahoe Basin Wednesday night through Thursday morning,” Crespo said.

    “After that it will be dry again until late in the weekend, after which we will have another chance on Sunday if another system brings some rain.”

    The Davis Fire has burned 14 buildings since it began on Saturday and prompted evacuations in several neighborhoods.
