Why JoJo Siwa’s Photoshoot with Ladygunn Magazine Is Getting Strong Reactions

JoJo Siwa knows how to get people talking and her latest photoshoot is getting her in a big way.

The 21-year-old dancer and singer posed for the cover of Ladygunn Magazine in a variety of looks, including one that made headlines in particular. In one photo, Siwa sports a bedazzled breastplate, abs and all, and a matching rhinestone bump.

“I learned from a young age that in the eyes of the public, all attention is attention… whether it’s good attention or just attention,” Siwa says in the interview, in which she talks about her career and actions.

And the former “Dance Moms” star is certainly turning heads, with some people shocked and others impressed.

“OMG JOJO SIWA????” tweeted @mazzypopstar alongside the photos.

“The internet isn’t so bad that it knows this is bad and I stand by my word that I will be Stan jojo siwa for the rest of my life,” someone else wrote on X.

@StOnge_Kim, on the other hand, was less impressed, saying that while “kids love” Siwa, “this is NOT the person you want your kids to look up to.”

Comments on the magazine’s Instagram post ranged from “I actually don’t like this at all” to “If this was gaga, y’all would eat it.”

Someone knew people would share their thoughts and wrote, “Who else came running to the comments? I nearly fell over myself reading them.”

“Oh my god this is so camp I love it,” another added, while someone else commented: “I don’t know who her manager is but they are ruining her career.”

Coincidentally, Siwa did talk about her management in the accompanying interview.

“I just signed new management, and they’re amazing, amazing people. They were like, ‘Okay, we need to get people to rally around you and really like you.’ And I was like, ‘Oh no, that’s not the point,'” she tells the magazine.

Over the past few years, Siwa has distanced herself from her former cheery Nickelodeon self and undergone an edgy rebranding. You could say her major makeover began with the release of her song and music video for “Karma” in April, in which she trades in her signature rainbow looks for a rocker-y Kiss-style eye makeup and outfit.

Of her new music and look, she told Billboard: “I wanted it to be as bold and as daring as possible. There’s nothing more daring than this song.”

“The genre is — I said it when I first signed with Columbia. I said, ‘I want to start a new genre of music.’ And they said, ‘What do you mean?’ And I said, well, ‘It’s called gay pop,'” added Siwa, who came out in 2021. The comment sparked controversy as many felt Siwa was dismissing the influence of other gay pop artists.

Since the release of “Karma,” Siwa continues to make bold statements that get people talking — and that’s exactly what she wants.

“My favorite thing on this earth is to entertain people and make them laugh, whether they laugh with me or at me,” Siwa tells LadyGunn. “Of course, no one likes to be hated, but I like to entertain, and that’s how people get entertained.”
