Who has the upper hand on Monday Night Football?

The Detroit Lions have lost their first home games to the Seattle Seahawks in two straight seasons, and Dan Campbell’s team has lost to the ‘Hawks overall in three straight seasons.

But out is jovial Pete Carroll for Seattle and ex-Michigan defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald as head coach for a Monday Night Football showdown (8:15 p.m., ABC, ESPN+) to conclude Week 4 of the 2024 NFL season.

Our Free Press sportswriters dig into the tasty matchup:

The Seahawks have had the Lions numbers lately, with wins in each of the past three seasons by a combined score of 136-105, but I think this game will be different. The Lions had problems with Seattle’s rushing attack under longtime coach Pete Carroll, but the scheme has changed under Macdonald and the Lions are currently playing as good a defense as anyone in the NFL.

This one won’t be a piece of cake. Kenneth Walker III brings balance to Seattle’s offense, DK Metcalf is a dangerous receiver and the Seahawks have the personnel to make life difficult for Jared Goff. But on Monday night, with the home crowd behind them, I think the more tested Lions will come out on top. The choice: Lions 24, Seahawks 20.

It’s a Monday night game at Ford Field and my ears are already ringing from the stadium noise. That should help, especially for a Lions defense that has gotten off to a good start but has suddenly turned into a MASH unit. Meanwhile, the offense has been disappointing. Not a good sign for the Lions, who are trying to end a six-game losing streak against the hot Seahawks, whose offense and defense are both ranked in the top 10. The choice: Seahawks 29, Lions 25.

The Lions should have two goals in this game: get the win and no more crazy injuries. But I believe this Lions team is built to survive adversity. Just bring in the next player and hook them up. Depending on who can play, that depth will be tested. But the Lions have enough talent to overcome it. The choice: Lions 27, Seahawks 21.

Dan Campbell finally beats Seattle. The defense is the reason. With Frank Ragnow sidelined, the Lions won’t run the ball as easily. Jared Goff will make just enough throws and the defense will make just enough stops. The choice: Lions 23, Seahawks 20.
