When was the last time the Buffalo Bills got blown out?

The Buffalo Bills were eliminated by the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday evening. It’s the first time since 2021 that the Bills have lost by more than one touchdown.

The Bills started this game in a big hole and couldn’t climb out of it. After punting on the opening possession, the Baltimore Ravens had a 1-play, 87-yard touchdown run by Derrick Henry. Buffalo managed a field goal on their second drive, but a 55-yard drive by the Ravens put them up 14-3. The Bills would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

The Ravens made it 21-3 in the second quarter before the Bills closed the score at 21-10 after a heroic partnership between Josh Allen and Khalis Shakir in the third quarter. A failed trick play led to a Bills turnover, and the Ravens scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive, putting the game away, 28–10.

The Bills missed a field goal to start the fourth quarter, and the Ravens kept going, winning 35-10.

It’s been 43 straight games since the Bills lost by more than six points — the longest streak in NFL history. (It was the fourth-longest streak of not losing by more than one score in NFL history.) The last time Buffalo lost this badly was Week 11 in 2021, when the Indianapolis Colts swept the Bills and racked up 264 rushing yards in a 41-14 loss. In that game, the Bills trailed 38-7 at one point in the third quarter.

There is a similarity in these two games, in that the Ravens had an almost 200-yard lead over the Bills on the ground on Sunday night.

However, the biggest difference in these games is the turnover. Against Indy, Buffalo had four turnovers. In the game against Baltimore, the Bills only lost one fumble and that was because the game was well in hand for the Ravens.

In this game, Buffalo’s third-down efficiency was abysmal against Baltimore, at just 16% before 3:18, and it jumped to 23% by the end of the game. The Bills only gained 236 total yards and were outscored by 200 yards. It was a failure on both sides of the ball, not a handful of plays.

The Bills pulled off a big win after their previous blowout, defeating the New Orleans Saints 31-6 in a Thanksgiving game a few days later.

Before that game in November 2021, the last time Buffalo lost by more than one score was October 2020 in a 26-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, which followed a 42-16 drubbing at the hands of the Tennessee Titans. These games were not a routine under head coach Sean McDermott.
