Rata Tata died in hospital on Wednesday evening Break the Candy Hospital in Mumbai at the age of 86. He was undergoing treatment for a long-term illness. When the industrialist and India’s tycoon passed away, the country’s citizens felt a tremendous sense of emptiness because of the impact he had. While Tata was a recipient of the Padma Vibhushanand his long list of achievements and work remains unparalleled, he somehow never married and remained single.
The tycoon had once appeared on ‘Rendezvous With Simi Garewal’ where he was asked why he never got married. In response, he had revealed, “A whole host of things (that kept me from getting married) – timing, my absorption in my work at the time. Sometimes I was almost ready to get married, but it didn’t work out.’
However, he revealed that he had fallen in love about four times and was about to get married, but somehow it never worked out. He did admit that he sometimes felt lonely. “There are often times when I feel lonely because I don’t have a wife or a family, and sometimes I long for that. Sometimes I enjoy the freedom of not having to worry about anyone else’s feelings or anyone else’s worries .Sometimes it gets a little lonely,” Tata said.
Incidentally, Tata also had a relationship with Simi Garewal. The actress had admitted this in an interview in 2011.
Though this was a very old conversation, Tata had recently revealed his first love during a conversation with Humans of Bombay and why he couldn’t marry her. He revealed: “It was in LA where I fell in love and almost got married. But at the same time I had made the decision to move back, at least temporarily, because I had been away from my grandmother, who was not with me. It was going too well , for almost seven years. So I came back to visit her and thought that the person I wanted to marry would come with me to India, but because of the Indo-China war of 1962.Her parents no longer approved of her making the switch, and the relationship failed.”
Tata’s remains will be kept at the National Center for Performing Arts (NCPA) at Nariman Point in south Mumbai from 10am to 4pm on Thursday. Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde has announced that Ratan Tata will be given a state funeral by the Maharashtra government.
