What NFL Games Are On Today? Everything You Need to Know About Sunday’s Week 1 Games

NFL Sundays are back.

The first Sunday of the 2024 NFL season will feature 13 games featuring 26 teams in action, culminating in the Sunday Night Football game between the Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Rams.

Quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins ​​make their debuts for their new teams in Atlanta, while Los Angeles Chargers star Justin Herbert and Indianapolis Colts second-year starter Anthony Richardson return from injury.

Caleb Williams (Chicago Bears), Jayden Daniels (Washington Commanders) and Bo Nix (Denver Broncos) make their debuts. It’s the fourth time since 1970 that at least three rookie quarterbacks start in Week 1.

Joe Burrow enters his fifth NFL season without knowing if star receiver Ja’Marr Chase will agree to a new contract, while receiver Tee Higgins is also looking for a big payday. The Bengals also welcome some new faces to the offense, including running back Zack Moss and tight end Mike Gesicki. But they should do just fine in their season opener against the new-look Patriots. Jerod Mayo begins his stint as Patriots coach following the departure of Bill Belichick, while veteran Jacoby Brissett is in line to start ahead of rookie Drake Maye to begin the season.

The Colts will also be poised to stake a claim to the division if their two stars stay healthy: quarterback Anthony Richardson is returning from a sophomore shoulder injury, while running back Jonathan Taylor could also be back in top form.

Jim Harbaugh’s return to the NFL begins with his first game as Chargers coach at SoFi Stadium, where the Raiders stole home-field advantage thanks to their loyal fans in the Los Angeles area. Justin Herbert returns as Chargers quarterback, but he’ll have new starters at the skill positions to play alongside. Herbert also says he’s healthy after a foot injury hampered this preseason after last season ended prematurely with a broken finger. The Raiders’ rebuild continues with veteran gunslinger Gardner Minshew II entering the second year of Antonio Pierce’s first season as head coach.

With Geno Smith returning at quarterback, the Seahawks begin life without Pete Caroll with new coach Mike MacDonald at home on Sunday against the Broncos, who also herald a new era. Bo Nix will be the first Broncos rookie to start at quarterback since John Elway (1983) while Sean Payton begins his second year as Denver’s coach. This will be the third time in seven seasons that the two teams have faced each other in the season opener, with the home team winning the previous two games (Denver in 2018 and Seattle in 2022).

Star receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin and standout tailback Rachaad White also return for Tampa Bay.

The Lions finished last season in the NFC championship game, a fairytale postseason run that included a win over Matt Stafford and the Rams in the wild-card round. The Lions appear poised for a Super Bowl run behind quarterback Jared Goff, running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and tight end Sam LaPorta. Stafford and the Rams return to Detroit on Sunday Night Football, as both NFC playoff contenders open their seasons in a rematch of their 24-23 thriller earlier this year.
