What is an average girls day? How to celebrate October 3

On Wednesday we wear pink, but this Thursday we celebrate October 3.

If you grew up in the 2000s, the original “Mean Girls” movie starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and others might have been an enjoyable part of your childhood. This year, the film not only celebrates its twentieth anniversary, but also marks a new beginning for the franchise, as the musical adaptation of “Mean Girls” was released in January.

Fans continue to keep the 2004 film’s legacy alive through unforgettable references and quotes, including “October 3,” which has taken on a life of its own as “Mean Girls” Day.

Jonathan Bennett in a striped button-down and graphic T-shirt looks over his left shoulder as he sits at a desk. Lindsay Lohan responds behind him, also sitting at a desk in a pink sweater.

What is the meaning of ‘October 3’ in ‘Mean Girls’?

In one of the film’s first scenes, Cady Heron – famously played by Lohan – starts talking ‘more and more’ to her crush, Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett).

“On October 3, he asked me what day it was,” Lohan says in a voiceover.

“It’s October 3,” she says in the scene.

Fans have been clinging to the date for years and even the movie stars have paid tribute on social media.

Lohan shared a post from the scene in 2021: “It’s October 3rd,” she captioned it.

Daniel Franzese, who played Damian in the film, also shared a tribute. In 2021, he thanked fans and the “House of Glen Coco” for their support.

“On this #MeanGirlsDay, I’m grateful for so much this movie has brought into my life, including great memories, friendships, and continued new adventures,” he wrote at the time.

How to Celebrate ‘Mean Girls’ Day on October 3rd

Below are some of our totally hip ideas for ways to celebrate the holidays:

  • Wear pink (obviously!) even if it’s not Wednesday.
  • Have lunch with your friends and reminisce about your favorite “Mean Girls” quotes.
  • Do something fun, like go to Taco Bell.
  • Eat cheese fries – and enjoy the carbs.
  • Spread a little joy as an older person and make some jokes! But don’t take off your wig when you get drunk like Damian’s grandma.
  • Head to the mall for a little retail therapy, just like in the movies.
  • Take the stage and recite Kevin G’s rap.
  • Dress up as Santa and perform the “Jingle Bell Rock” with your besties.
  • Let it blow dry so that your hair is so big that you can fill it with secrets.
  • You can also check out your local bookstore in honor of this somewhat crude yet funny line from Amanda Seyfried’s character, Karen Smith: “Gretchen, I’m sorry I laughed at you when you got diarrhea at Barnes & Noble. And I I’m sorry I told everyone. And I’m sorry I have to repeat it now.’
  • Stream the new musical adaptation of “Mean Girls” on Paramount+.
  • And most importantly, you can rewatch the film that shaped so many of us! It is available on Paramount Plus, Apple TV and to rent/purchase on Prime Video.

There is no limit to celebrating the day!
