Texas A&M football kicks off the Mike Elko era with a tough opener against Notre Dame on Saturday.

The No. 20 Aggies will face the No. 7 Fighting Irish, who are coming off a 10-3 season under then-second-year head coach Marcus Freeman. Notre Dame also hopes it has an upgrade at quarterback with the addition of Duke transfer Riley Leonard, who played under Elko last season.

Texas A&M, a lurking College Football Playoff contender for many this season, received an influx of talent this offseason, landing the No. 4-ranked transfer portal class by 247Sports. The Aggies also return second-year starting quarterback Conner Weigman, a former five-star recruit who showed flashes last season before suffering a season-ending injury.

Weigman completed 82 of 119 passes for 979 yards with eight touchdowns to two interceptions in three games last season before his campaign ended prematurely in the SEC opener. But a test against a strong Notre Dame defense figures to be his toughest task yet as a starter.
