Weekend forecast: likely showers and storms

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – After one of the driest Septembers to date (the 8th driest through Thursday), we’re expecting a lot of rain Sunday night.

Showers and thunderstorms are possible as early as late tonight. Starting around 10:00 PM and probably after midnight, a few storms are possible, some of which could be severe. Quarter-sized hail and 60 mph winds are the biggest concerns.

Saturday will see a similar risk, but the overall severity of the threat is low. The main weather story remains the amount of rain.

In the afternoon and evening, occasional heavy storms are possible.

How much is the question on everyone’s mind? Earlier this week it looked like 3, 4 maybe even 5 inches was on the table. Now it looks like 0.75-1.5 inches is the consensus. That’s still 7-15 times as much rain as we’ve had this month.

In many areas, more than 2.5 cm of rain could still fall.

Meanwhile, a cold front will be a major factor in precipitation formation this weekend, along with dropping our temperatures. High 60s to low 70s will be seen in the west, while mid 80s are possible in southeastern Nebraska. Expect increasing cloud cover and rain to play a major role in how much we warm up.

Temperatures are expected to be between 15 and 17 degrees on Sunday, which will be quite a shock after what we have seen over the past week.

Next week we will slowly reach normal temperatures for this time of year, with again a smaller chance of rain.

Overall below average and dry.
