Weather Forecast First warning: dangerous heat, heavy storms Monday

Here’s the weather forecast for Sunday evening, August 25, 2024 from Minnesota’s Weather Authority and meteorologist Matt Serwe.

Monday is a Forecast First Alert day from Minnesota’s Weather Authority. Dangerous heat and humidity will make it feel like 100° to 105° for a few hours from the Twin Cities south. In addition, severe storms are likely late in the day and into the night.

Clouds kept temperatures in check on Sunday, but you could feel the stifling humidity. With more sun in the forecast Monday afternoon, highs will climb into the low 90s for the southern half of Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. Dew points will climb to the mid to upper 70s. Combine the two and it will feel like 100° to 105°. This is the kind of heat where you’ll want to limit your time and physical activity outside. In fact, with light winds, it could be dangerous enough to implement OSHA restrictions and keep high school practices indoors. As always, drink plenty of water, make sure your pets have limited outdoor time, and check on the very young and very old in your community to make sure they’re safe.

That heat will produce storms Monday night. Storms could develop in parts of northern and western Minnesota in the late afternoon. Western Minnesota has the best chance for storms producing large hail, strong winds and isolated tornadoes in the evening. The storms should arrive in the Twin Cities after sunset and pose more of a hail and wind threat overnight, along with heavy rain. Some of that rain could linger into Tuesday morning, then move north in the afternoon.

Another round of rain and storms is likely on Thursday. The chance of extreme rainfall is lower on Thursday, but it could still affect the start of Minnesota high school football, plus the Gophers home football game. That system will bring much cooler air into the weekend, with highs dropping into the upper 70s and lower 80s.
