Following last year’s ceremony in Newark, New Jersey, the MTV Video Music Awards return to New York’s UBS Arena. The event, which kicks off with the 2024 VMAs red carpet at 6 p.m. ET, is hosted by Megan Thee Stallion and honors excellence in music with performances from Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Lenny Kravitz and Katy Perry. Taylor Swift leads the nominations with 12, while Post Malone trails with 11 and Eminem has eight. Meanwhile, Carpenter, Megan Thee Stallion and Ariana Grande all have seven nominations. Perry will be honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Last year’s red carpet featured some notable style victories, from Doja Cat’s barely-there cobweb Monse gown to Olivia Rodrigo’s rhinestone-encrusted, body-conscious Ludovic de Saint Sernin. The clean trend proved popular, with Emily Ratajkowski’s archive Jean Paul Gaultier and Megan’s Brandon Blackwood numbers doing the trick. Elsewhere, Cardi B rocked cult-favorite designer Dilara Findikoglu, while Nicki Minaj wore a Dolce & Gabbana wedding dress.

With 40 years under their belts, the VMAs have produced plenty of memorable fashion moments, from Janet Jackson’s jumpsuits in 1993 to Gwyneth Paltrow’s oft-mentioned red velvet Gucci suit by Tom Ford in 1996. And who can forget Pamela Anderson’s oversized furry pink hat in 1999 or Lil’ Kim’s one-of-a-kind pasty that same year? Meanwhile, this century’s VMAs gave us Lady Gaga’s inimitable meat dress.
