Villas Boas signs Omorodion for Porto after Blues fiasco

One of the transfer debacles of this summer was Chelsea’s attempt to sign Samu Omorodion as part of the deal to bring Conor Gallagher to Atletico Madrid.

A last-minute breakdown meant Gallagher had to return to west London, despite having already travelled to Spain, hoping the Blues could do a deal to allow him to leave.

Fortunately, a deal was struck to see Joao Felix return to Stamford Bridge, although it did leave Omorodion in a footballing slump for a while.

André Villas Boas, former Chelsea manager and current Porto president, came to the rescue.

Late on Friday evening, CaughtOffside columnist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported on X (formerly Twitter) that the Spain international had signed for the Portuguese giants.

A complicated deal has been struck that Atlético Madrid are clearly happy with, with Porto getting the player for a low initial transfer fee of €15 million, which could rise by a further €10 million over the next two seasons.

Chelsea fiasco ends with Samu Omorodion heading to Porto

Omorodion has a contract with the Dragons until 2029, with a buyout clause of €100 million.

Now that Gallagher has finally been introduced to the adoring Atleti crowd this past week, it looks like this long-running saga may have a happy ending for all involved.

At the age of 20, Omorodion has already made a name for himself as a striker.

Last season he was loaned to Alaves and finished the 2023/24 season as top scorer. Transfermarkt recorded a respectable score of eight goals and one assist from 34 assists.

With 27 goals in 72 games in his career, he shows his potential in front of goal and Porto will undoubtedly be hoping to get the best out of him in the coming seasons.
