Like AT&T, T-Mobile responded to us and was quick to note that its network is operating normally, aside from Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, which are still ongoing.

The full statement reads: “Based on the increased reports on Down Detector regarding other providers, we believe our customers may be experiencing difficulty connecting to other networks. Outside of some areas where recovery continues from Hurricane Helene, our network is operating normally.”

Down detector reports for T-Mobile are decreasing, currently at 840 as of 12:56 ET.

Considering that the biggest spark in reported outages on Verizon via Down Detector occurred at 10am ET, we are now about three hours into this outage. Notifications peaked at over 105,000, but have since dropped to a still-significant 62,001 as of 12:41 a.m. ET on the site. Many users in the United States are still reporting problems on Verizon’s network, including not being able to make calls or send text messages and even seeing SOS in the top bar if they have an iPhone.

Verizon has provided no further comment since its initial statement at 11:53 a.m. ET, noting that it is aware of the issue and is working to resolve it.

AT&T says its network is working fine

AT&T just posted on X (formerly Twitter) that its network is functioning fine, noting that the spike we posted about on Down Detector in the number of reported outages “This likely reflects the challenges our customers experience when trying to connect to users on another network.” This means the problem is on Verizon’s side, not AT&T’s. You can view the full statement above.

T-Mobile has not yet commented, but Down Detector is still showing a peak in reported outages for them as well.

While reported outages on Down Detector for Verizon increased to over 105,000 at 11:37 a.m. ET, nearly an hour later, outage reports on the site appear to be decreasing. It currently shows more than 70,000 outage reports and a similar heat map for affected areas in the United States.

However, many affected customers are still posting to Threads and Similarly, others note that they cannot make calls and have not received any calls.

If you’re just joining us, here’s a quick TLDR on what’s going on with Verizon this morning. The US-based wireless carrier is currently dealing with a nationwide outage that is impacting people across the country. Affected customers are reported to be unable to make or receive calls and access data. Some iPhones may see SOS or SOS Only appear in the top status bar instead of network reception bars, which means the phone can’t connect to the cellular network.

While outage reports started again for hours at 9 a.m. ET, Verizon issued a response shortly after 11:50 a.m. ET, noting that it was aware of a service issue and was working quickly to “identify and resolve” it.

“VerizonDown” and “VerizonOutage” are trending on Threads and X as affected users share their frustrations and experiences.

If you have an iPhone and Verizon, but currently see SOS or SOS Only in the top status bar of your device, your phone is unable to connect to your carrier’s cellular network. That’s similar to the current Verizon outage if you’re a customer but your iPhone can still make emergency calls in the United States, Australia, and Canada.

Apple has a support document about SOS or SOS Only that appears on your iPhone, but there’s not much to do except wait for Verizon to fix the problem. You can try restarting your iPhone or turning on Airplane Mode for about 15 seconds to see if this fixes the problem.

Verizon customers affected by the outage are still posting about the experience on Threads and Some even include the phrase, “Can you hear me now?” as a nod to the carrier’s old advertisements.

Verizon is responding to the network outage

Verizon just responded to us and said: “We are aware of an issue impacting service for some customers. Our technicians are involved and we are working quickly to identify and resolve the issue.”

I hope the issue can be found and resolved quickly as it has been going on for several hours in some regions. Verizon also shared the same statement on its social channels.

Similar to the massive AT&T network outages earlier in 2024, while reports first started with Verizon, Down Detector is now showing an increase in reports for AT&T and T-Mobile. It’s important to remember that these may not be issues with these carriers specifically, but you are calling a number connected to Verizon’s network. Nevertheless, we contacted both AT&T and T-Mobile this morning to ask about any network disruptions.

Since reports of the outage first appeared around 9 a.m. ET, there have been more than 105,000 reports of an outage on Down Detector for Verizon, and that appears to be increasing.

People are noticing that they can’t dial out or have no network, which leads to the SOS icon appearing to replace network bars on a newer iPhone. This feature allows the iPhone to connect to a satellite to send messages or make calls. It was originally used for satellite emergency SOS, but now also functions for satellite messaging.

Verizon customers are asking on the social platform Threads whether they are the only ones experiencing network problems and expressing their frustration. Down Detector’s outage map shows New York, Washington, DC, Atlanta and Kansas as the areas with the most reported problems, followed by Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Fransisco.

Some users are noticing that the cell service reception indicators – also known as the bars at the top of a smartphone screen – have disappeared in favor of SOS and a satellite symbol.
