Utah QB Cam Rising ruled out against Oklahoma State, Isaac Wilson starts

Utah quarterback Cam Rising wore a protective glove on his throwing hand during pregame warmups and was not in the Utes’ starting lineup Saturday afternoon, sidelined for the second straight week with a right hand injury.

Freshman quarterback Isaac Wilson, making his second career start away from Rising, led No. 12 Utah to a visit to No. 15 Oklahoma State, ranked 14th, in one of the most important games of the 2024 Big 12 calendar.

ESPN previously reported that Rising would not be decided until week 4.

Rising injured his hand on September 7 during the second quarter of the game against Baylor when he threw a ball, was pushed out of bounds and landed awkwardly on the water coolers on the Bears’ sideline.

Rising warmed up with a glove on his hand for last week’s game against Utah State, but did not play. He was also spotted on the sideline with two fingers wrapped around his hand against Baylor.

Utah’s offense plays most of its snaps from the middle and uses slaps as a mechanism in the snapping operation, both of which put stress on the fingers.

Wilson is a true freshman who made his first start against Utah State, completing 20 of 33 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns. He participated in first-team practices this week when Rising was out.

Wilson is the brother of former BYU quarterback Zach Wilson, who now plays in the NFL for the Denver Broncos.

Rising is a seventh-year senior who emerged as one of the Pac-12’s top quarterbacks in 2021 and 2022. He has been plagued by injuries in recent seasons, as an injury in the Rose Bowl after the 2022 season ultimately led to him missing the entire 2023 season.
