Coco Gauff did not defend her US Open title after being defeated in the fourth round in New York by Emma Navarro.

Third-seeded Gauff played a disjointed match and lost 3-6 6-4 3-6 to fellow countryman and 13th-seeded Navarro.

Gauff made 19 double faults, three of which in the final game helped Navarro win and send her to the US Open quarterfinals for the first time.

Navarro’s victory ends Gauff’s bid to become the first woman to defend the US Open title since Serena Williams in 2014.

This makes the 23-year-old the youngest American woman to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the US Open in the same year since Williams in 2004.

“The last two years I lost in the first round and now to make it to the quarterfinals is pretty crazy,” Navarro said.

“This is the city where I was born and it feels so special to play here. Coco is a great player.

“I have a lot of respect for her and I know she will come back here and win again.”
