    UNLV starting quarterback leaves team week before crucial game against Syracuse

    Syracuse, NY — In a striking post on social media early Wednesday morning, UNLV starting quarterback Matthew Sluka said he will not play the remainder of the season.

    The news comes a week before the undefeated Rebels host Syracuse at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

    Sluka is not injured. He said he decided to leave the team suddenly after “certain proposals” made to him during his recruitment “were not fulfilled” after he signed up.

    Sluka didn’t say what that meant.

    “Despite the discussions, it became clear that these commitments would not be fulfilled in the future,” Sluka wrote on social media.

    “I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for continued success for the program.”

    Sluka’s decision comes as the Rebels were off to a 3-0 start and the school appeared in a national poll for the first time.

    He said he wouldn’t play his final season so he could keep his rights.

    Sluka, a senior transfer, was part of the core at Holy Cross that built the Crusaders into one of the Patriot League’s top programs under former coach Bob Chesney before leaving for James Madison.

    Sluka threw for 5,916 yards and 59 touchdowns while rushing for 3,583 yards and 38 scores at Holy Cross. He set the NCAA Division I record for rushing yards in a game by a quarterback with 330 against Lafayette last season.

    In three games at UNLV, Sluka led the team in rushing with 253 yards and a touchdown on 39 carries. He completed 21 of 48 passes for 318 yards and six touchdowns and threw an interception.

    His departure puts a dent in UNLV’s fight for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

    UNLV hosts Fresno State on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. for the Mountain West season opener.

    Syracuse hosts Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon, though the Crusaders are 1-3 and working to rebuild under first-year coach Dan Curran.

    Syracuse will play UNLV on Friday, October 4. The game will begin at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time and will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1.
