    The North Carolina Tar Heels open the 2024 college football season against the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Thursday (8:00 p.m., FOX) at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

    After two straight seasons with at least eight wins, the Tar Heels enter their sixth season in head coach Mack Brown’s second tenure in Chapel Hill without Sam Howell or Drake Maye at quarterback.

    This is the second meeting between UNC and Minnesota. Last season, the two programs met for the first time at Kenan Stadium, with the Tar Heels winning 31-13.

    Conner Harrell or Max Johnson will be the starting quarterback for the Tar Heels on Thursday, but UNC has several All-ACC players returning, including running back Omarion Hampton and pass rusher Kaimon Rucker.

In a game that will likely be decided late, I’m going with the best player on the field — UNC running back Omarion Hampton — to make the difference. Hampton, who had 46 rushing yards against Minnesota in 2023, will help the Heels pull out a win.
