The Met Office has today warned of chaos from Storm Lillian, with heavy rain and 80mph winds causing chaos over the festive period.

Three yellow weather warnings are in place across the UK as the storm makes landfall.

A wind warning is in effect for North Wales, Northern England and Southern Scotland until 11am.

This morning, wind gusts of up to 130 km/h are blowing from the east, causing delays on the M6, A66 and A1(M).

Damage to buildings can occur, for example when roof tiles are blown off roofs.

According to meteorologists, the flying debris, like the high waves on the coast, pose a “life-threatening threat”.

Power outages in the warning zone may cause other services, such as mobile phone connectivity, to fail.

Road, rail, air and ferry services may also experience major delays and cancellations.

There is also a yellow rain warning in place for south-west Scotland and Aberdeenshire until 9am.

Homes, roads and businesses could all be flooded and up to 50mm of rain could fall on higher ground.

Met Office expert Jason Kelly said: “Storm Lilian will bring some potentially damaging wind gusts on Friday morning.

“Wind gusts will be between 80 and 96 km/h, with a chance of wind gusts of more than 120 km/h in some places.

“Rain has fallen at Lilian, which has also led to a Met Office warning for parts of Scotland.

“Within the warning area, higher areas could see an additional 50mm of rain, while a large area could see 20-30mm of rain.

“Much of this ends up on saturated soil, increasing the risk of surface water flooding.”

Tomorrow there will also be heavy rain in the south of England, but this should clear by mid-afternoon.

The rest of the weekend will remain dry and nice weather, although temperatures will be a bit chilly.

But the North West is set to experience more showers and strong winds over the Bank Holiday weekend.
