UEFA Champions League result: Pep Guardiola’s team held by Serie A champions at Etihad Stadium

HAALAND AND MAN CITY WINCHESTERED BY IMPRESSIVE INTER

Manchester City endured an evening of frustration as Pep Guardiola’s side opened the UEFA Champions League season with a 0-0 home draw against Internazionale.

Simone Inzaghi’s Serie A champions proved a tough nut to crack, with Erling Haaland still challenging to equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s record as the fastest player to score 100 goals for a club (in 105 games).

The Norwegian has indeed been in top form this season, but his 104th game in a Citizens shirt was ultimately an unsatisfactory one, with him stuck on 99, while the visitors deservedly took a share of the spoils.

It could have been an even better night for the Nerazzurri but they lacked the finishing touch to a series of excellent counter-attacks that saw Marcus Thuram, Matteo Darmian and former Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan all waste good chances.

City struggled against an excellent Inter defence, with substitutes Phil Foden and Ilkay Gundogan coming closest to helping the home side, while Kevin de Bruyne was also substituted at half-time due to a worrying injury ahead of the weekend.

Man City then turn their attention to a home game against Arsenal on Sunday, while Inter face neighbours AC Milan in Serie A.
