Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray on Friday demanded withdrawal of cases against those who protested in Badlapur against the alleged sexual abuse of two preschool girls at a local school.

Addressing a press conference, Thackeray said the August 24 Maharashtra Bandh called by the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) party was against “perversion”. He appealed to people of all castes and religions to participate in it.

He said the bandh should be strictly observed till 2pm to ensure emergency services remained operational.

Thackeray criticised the Eknath Shinde government for continuing to make arrests in connection with the Badlapur protest and said, The cases against the protesters should be withdrawn.

On Tuesday, the town of Badlapur in Thane district was rocked by a massive protest as thousands of people took to the streets and railway tracks to protest against the alleged sexual harassment of two four-year-old girls by a male chaperone at a local school.

At least 25 police personnel were injured in the incidents of stone-pelting at the railway station and other parts of Badlapur during the protest. Police have arrested 72 persons in connection with the violence during the riot.

The suspect was arrested on August 17. He is being held in police custody until August 26.
