Trump’s gift for Jimmy Carter’s 100th birthday? A compliment, something like that

Even on former President Jimmy Carter’s 100th birthday, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump focused on the 39th president’s term in office.

During a campaign stop in Waunakee, Wisconsin, Trump said President Joe Biden has replaced Carter as the worst president in American history.

“Jimmy Carter is the luckiest man because Jimmy Carter is considered a brilliant president by comparison,” Trump said.

Trump made the same joke at a May rally in Wildwood, New Jersey, where he incorrectly referred to the former governor of Georgia as “Jimmy Connors,” a retired tennis star from the 1970s. Trump joked that “he’s happy too.”

Brian Kemp declares October 1 ‘Jimmy Carter Day’

Georgia’s Republican Governor Brian Kemp, with whom Trump has feuded over the state’s conduct in the 2020 election, has declared October 1 as “Jimmy Carter Day.”

In a statement, Kemp, who endorsed Trump in the November election, said Carter “has remained a person of strong convictions and a committed advocate of community service.”

“Of his many accomplishments, he is perhaps best known as a loving husband, a caring humanitarian and an esteemed Sunday school teacher,” Kemp’s statement said.

Carter spent his birthday at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he has been in hospice care since February 2023.

The Carter family has expressed similarly dire views about Trump.

On Tuesday, the Carter Center shared videos of successors praising the 39th president, including former Presidents Biden, Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton — but nothing from Trump.
