Trump congratulates Harris on his performance at the 9/11 memorial debate

Even Donald Trump was outdone by Kamala Harris’ performance during the first presidential debate.

The former president appeared to say “good job” to Harris several times as they shook hands at a 9/11 memorial event in Manhattan on Wednesday. In a video of the meeting, Vice President Harris can be seen responding with “Thank you, thank you.”

The meeting was orchestrated by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who tapped Harris on the arm to distract her from a conversation with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. J.D. Vance, who was standing to Trump’s left, sat out the conversation.

The meeting came hours after Harris had wrong-footed a bewildered Trump in their first nationally televised debate. Harris won the night handily, with polls of viewers and Trump allies agreeing that the Democratic presidential nominee was running away with the debate.

Harris’ campaign ended the evening eager to debate again.

“Vice President Harris is ready for a second debate. Is Donald Trump?” Harris Campaign Chair Jen O’Malley-Dillon asked in a statement.

Trump, for his part, dodged the idea of a second debate, blaming his performance on “unfair” ABC News moderators during a conversation with Fox & Friends hosts on Wednesday. He also said Harris’ eagerness for a second debate is just proof that he won the first meeting.

“They lost badly. The first thing they did was ask for a debate, because that’s what a fighter says when he loses: ‘I want a rematch. I want a rematch,'” Trump said. “They’re always the losing guy, the fighter, the debater, they always ask for a rematch.”
