The latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center shows that the chance of a tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico has now increased.

While an area of ​​low pressure is expected to develop over the next two days, Hurricane Kirk intensifies into a Category 4 storm in the Atlantic Ocean with maximum sustained winds of nearly 140 miles per hour.

Hurricane activity has increased after a brief lull in August, with three named storms forming since Helene’s landfall, causing at least 128 deaths and hundreds still missing.

According to the NHC PM weather advisory, a broad area of ​​low pressure is expected to develop from this system over the southwestern or south-central Gulf of Mexico over the next two days, and further subsequent development is possible as the low pressure area moves slowly towards the east. or northeastward. A tropical or subtropical depression or storm could form early to mid next week if the low remains separated from a frontal boundary expected to extend across the Gulf of Mexico next week.

Is a hurricane headed for Texas?

Regardless of tropical or subtropical development in the Gulf of Mexico, locally heavy rainfall may occur over parts of Mexico in the coming days and parts of the Florida Peninsula late this weekend into next week, the NHC said in their advisory.

Although Hurricane Kirk is expected to remain over the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean, its effects could be felt as far away as the East Coast of the United States on Sunday.
