Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs win first game of NFL season

The Kansas City Chiefs are 1-0 as they look for a third win!

The reigning Super Bowl champions, led by Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, stayed on top in their first game of the NFL season. On Thursday, September 5, they narrowly defeated Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens 27-20 at Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri.

After an early touchdown to the Ravens in the first quarter, the Chiefs followed up with a touchdown of their own and did not give up, leading the rest of the game. They added two field goals in the second quarter to go into halftime up 13-10, and another touchdown in the third.

The teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but despite another field goal – and a late play that nearly tied the game – the Ravens could no longer keep up and the Chiefs ran away with the win.

The final moments of the game had fans on edge as the Ravens went to the 10-yard line with just seconds left. With 1 second left on third down, Jackson threw to Isiah Likely who caught the ball in the endzone, seemingly tying the game and sending it to overtime — but his toe narrowly crossed the line, negating the play.

Mahomes, Kelce and the Chiefs have made it clear from the start that they want to win an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl this season and make history. While they still have a few games — and 17+ games — to go, they are on track to win their first.

The team was cheered on by Kelce’s girlfriend, pop superstar Taylor Swift, who was hanging out with his parents Ed and Donna in a suite at Arrowhead. Wearing a denim corset top, jean shorts and thigh-high leather boots in Chiefs red, Swift, 34, was spotted giving fans a thumbs up, jumping up and down and hugging Donna in celebration.

Before the game, the team held an official kickoff pregame show, the World’s Largest Tailgate: Tailgate Games. Hosted by Saturday Night LiveChiefs superfan Heidi Gardner and actor Rob Riggle were among the biggest celebrities at the party. Donna herself made friendship bracelets with Gardner (as a nod to Swift) and showed off her Travis shirt, which he signed: “Love you Mommy!”

The Chiefs will look to make it 2-0 next Sunday, September 15, when they host the Cincinnati Bengals in Kansas City.
