Travis Kelce is being told to retire by analysts and fans amid career-worst statistics, Taylor Swift controversy and TV distractions

NFL analysts and fans are adamant that Travis Kelce is headed for retirement after his latest performance continued the worst form of his NFL career.

Kelce played a supporting role again on Sunday night as the Kansas City Chiefs extended their perfect start to the season to 3-0 with a 22-17 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

The 34-year-old, whose girlfriend Taylor Swift missed a game for the first time this season, was captured by TV cameras looking particularly miserable on the sidelines in a clip that went viral.

Kelce, a three-time Super Bowl champion, had just four catches for 30 yards in Atlanta, while his The slow start to the season continued after similar performances against the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals.

NBC lead analyst Cris Collinsworth admitted he was “baffled” by Kelce on Sunday night after watching him struggle so much in Week 1 against the Ravens.

He said in commentary: ‘I’m just stunned. I mean, one game, big deal. Two games, okay.

“This is the third game now where we haven’t seen the magic of (Patrick) Mahomes and Kelce, and I can’t really explain that last one.”

Rodney Harrison, another NBC analyst, blamed Kelce’s recent disappointing performances on his other commitments.

He said, ‘He’s busy. He’s got a lot on his mind. Think about it. He’s doing a lot of different things. Media-wise, he’s playing football, he’s got other things to do.

‘When you are in that situation, you have to forget everything and focus 100 percent on football. That is the most important responsibility.

‘Guys joke about it. Jesse Bates did a great job tonight.

“He (Kelce) just doesn’t have the same speed. He’s still a good player, but I don’t think he’s a great, great player.”

Kelce’s statistics show a clear decline in performance compared to recent years.

After his first three games in 2023, Kelce 17 receptions for 152 yards and two touchdowns.

He opened the 2022 season with 17 receptions for 230 yards and two touchdowns in his first three games.

During the same period in 2021, he had 20 receptions for 289 yards and three touchdowns.

So far this season, he has yet to score and has only eight receptions for 69 yards, the fewest in a three-game series of his career.

Towards the end of last season, there was a lot of talk about Kelce’s possible retirement, especially since his brother Jason – who is only two years older – decided to retire from football in March.

But Kelce admitted before the start of this season that football gives him “a purpose” and that he would have a “hard time figuring out when to stop.”

He said: ‘I love football and the way it takes me out of everyday life and gives me something that really makes me happy.

‘I like coming here, working on my skills, learning a new game plan and perfecting it for the people around me.

“It gives me a purpose to get through my day and live my life, and I’m just so excited to do it. It’s going to be hard to figure out when to stop or not.”

Given his many commercial deals and his budding career as an actor and TV host, Kelce has certainly already begun planning his life around football.

He will star in an upcoming horror series on FX called Grotesquerie and will host Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?, which will air on Prime Video. He is also linked to a role in the highly anticipated Happy Gilmore sequel with Adam Sandler.

The Wall Street Journal revealed in December that Kelce had appeared in 375 commercials during football games, the most of any player in the NFL.

His contracts, which range from Pfizer to Campbell Soup to Pepsi, were mostly signed before his love life became public. However, according to the WSJ, many sponsors rushed the release of the Kelce commercials to coincide with his newfound fame.

Kelce also recently inked a $100 million deal with Amazon for his hugely popular podcast “New Heights,” which he co-produces with his brother Jason.

Fans watching Sunday night’s game took to social media to say that Kelce decided the game.

One wrote: ‘Travis Kelce looks ready for retirement. The regression is insane!’

A second posted: ‘I feel horrible that Taylor Swift ruined Travis Kelce’s NFL career. He’s too distracted… Time for him to retire so he can focus on his girlfriend and podcast. Time to move on.’

A third added: ‘Travis Kelce needs to get his mind back on football or retire. He hasn’t had a double digit game this season. Time to go.’

“Chiefs have proven 3 games in a row that Travis is worthless to the team. Rice should get paid,” shared another.

One fan brutally posted: ‘Taylor Swift ruined Travis Kelce lmaooo Just let Travis retire your heart ain’t in it no more baby boy and you’ll never be like Gronk again.’

Kelce’s latest bad night came after her friend Swift failed to show up to a Chiefs game for the first time this season.

The pop star was nowhere to be seen in Atlanta, despite her schedule off due to a break in her international Eras Tour.

On Saturday, Swift was spotted enjoying a casual night out with best friend Gigi Hadid in New York City. Wearing a plaid miniskirt, the pair grabbed a bite to eat at The Corner Store restaurant in SoHo.

The couple are said to be ‘much more upset than they let on’ by the ‘breakup contract’ that emerged earlier this month, which stated that a split was imminent.

Kelce’s reps have been forced to deny that the couple had plans to split after a document on his US PR firm’s letterhead was circulated online.

A plan was outlined to release an official statement later this month, three days “after the split,” to “give time for the initial media hype to subside and clarity to emerge.”

The filing said the announcement would focus on Kelce’s “personal growth” by framing the split as a “natural part of life.” It would also emphasize his “dedication to his career and his continued accomplishments in the sports industry.”

After their season opener, Kelce and Swift flew back to New York together for a romantic weekend.

They went out to dinner at Brooklyn’s famous Lucali restaurant, attended the US Open men’s team final with Patrick and Brittany Mahomes, and were also guests at model Karen Elson’s wedding.

Perhaps the clearest evidence of Kelce’s dwindling following in football is that his biggest supporters are Taylor Swift’s loyal fan base.

The criticism, particularly from Harrison, sparked angry responses from Swifties, who took to social media to defend him.

One of them posted: ‘This is such a bullshit talking point. Because if you actually listened to Trav he would be 150% fixated on football.

“Outside of the podcast (which he films on his day off), we don’t see him. All the “stuff” you see him involved in is done during the off-season. I’m tired.”

Another tagged Harrison in their post, writing: ‘@Rodney_Harrison I see you have a family but what I don’t see is you saying your wife is distracting you from work. Keep Travis’ personal life out of the game or put your own life in it.’

“That’s not possible. Travis stays late at the facility to do more reps and they decide to say that,” added a third Swiftie.

Other fans blamed Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and coach Andy Reid for not getting Kelce the ball.

One fan said, “And then they start blaming it on his offseason mistakes. No one talks about Mahomes not giving him the ball when he’s open.”

Another added: ‘”He doesn’t have the same speed” and yet he gets open on every play and blocks successfully. I’m done.’

Mahomes claimed afterward that Kelce’s coverage by opposing defenses made it difficult to get the ball to him.

The quarterback said, “I mean, the respect they have for Travis is still unreal and it’s well deserved.

“We call a lot of plays for Travis and it seems like two or three people go to him.

“He gets it. That’s the beauty of him. He wants to make an impact on the game, but he ultimately wants to win.”

‘I’m going to do my best to keep giving him the ball when he’s there, when he’s free.

“I think the more Rashee (Rice) plays, the more we can run and the more we can get (Xavier) Worthy involved. I think that opens up Travis.

“People really try to take him away, but it actually makes other guys open up.”
