Tour Championship purse, prize money: Sahith Theegala’s self-imposed penalty cost him $2.5 million at East Lake

The PGA Tour season is officially over and Scottie Scheffler is leaving East Lake Golf Club with the FedEx Cup and a massive $25 million paycheck.

Scheffler capped his historic season with a victory at the Tour Championship on Sunday afternoon in Atlanta. It was his seventh victory of the year and his first-ever FedEx Cup title. It also nearly doubled his total earnings in 2024, already a Tour record, and capped a dominant season the PGA Tour hadn’t seen since Tiger Woods nearly two decades ago.

While the increased prize pool this week made it significant even for the last golfer in the field, who still walked away with more than $500,000, the most notable part of the payout at East Lake involved Sahith Theegala and his self-imposed two-stroke penalty. Considering how he finished, it’s one of the costliest penalties in recent golf history.

Theegala called himself a penalty Saturday afternoon after he said he floored his club into a fairway bunker on the third hole at East Lake. But no one, not even the cameras, noticed Theegala had done anything wrong at the time.

Theegala said that after hitting his approach shot out of the bunker, he noticed a small amount of sand moving during his backswing. Although no one noticed it but himself, Theegala immediately called his playing partner Xander Schauffel and the official. He was eventually given a two-stroke penalty and double-bogeyed the hole.

“I wouldn’t have been able to sleep (if I hadn’t given the penalty),” he said after the third round.

Despite the double, Theegala made seven birdies on his back nine and five straight to close out the day, putting him at 17-under for the week and in solo third place.

On Sunday, Theegala made four birdies on his front nine to finish with a 7-under 64, thanks in large part to a pair of birdies to close out his day. That put him at 24-under for the week and gave him a solo third-place finish. While that earned him a $7.5 million paycheck, he would have finished tied with Collin Morikawa for second without his penalty. That would have sent him home with $10 million instead.

In total, the punishment he imposed on himself cost him $2.5 million.

Theegala won his first Tour victory last season at the Fortinet Championship. He claimed his eighth top-10 finish of the season on Sunday afternoon and earned a spot on the US Presidents Cup team later this month.

Although his punishment ultimately cost him several million, Theegala left with a clear conscience – and probably a lot of new fans.
