According to Ange Postecoglou, Yves Bissouma has been on his best behavior since the indiscretion with the balloon full of laughing gas.

He is unusually punctual and comes first to team meetings, eager to show that a lesson has been learned about responsibility.

And after being sidelined for the first game of the season, Bissouma continued his rehabilitation process with a first goal for Tottenham, firing the ball into the top corner to secure a comfortable win and get Postecoglou’s second season off to a flying start.

Heung-min Son capitalised on a Jordan Pickford error for the second, allowing Spurs to take control and score in the fourth after Cristian Romero celebrated his 100th appearance for the club with a goal headed in from a corner.

It was all far too easy against a weak Everton side, who have conceded seven goals in their first two games without scoring a single one.

They arrived in London exhausted and refreshed, with an injury crisis on top of the other crises gripping the club, meaning that 19-year-old Roman Dixon made his debut at right-back. Dixon came up against a Spurs debutant of the same age, Wilson Odobert, who had been selected to start on the left flank in a team designed to create as if Postecoglou expected to have a lot of possession.

Tottenham took the lead from the start and Pickford made three good saves before being beaten. There was a block from Cristian Romero that should have done better and a flying effort to stop a deflected shot from Son.

He then ran forward to overpower James Maddison and was lucky when Brennan Johnson missed the ball with a header that should have allowed him to score.

Pickford was helpless as Spurs took the lead. Dejan Kulusevski fired into the box from the right and created the chance for Bissouma on the edge of the area, who took a straight shot with his right foot and saw the ball fly into the top corner.

The Everton keeper was guilty of the second, guilty of a bad touch as he moved the ball across his body to kick with his left leg. Son pounced on the mistake, ripping past with a blistering burst of acceleration to steal the ball and roll it into an open goal.

Pickford held up his hands in apology. It felt like a long way back, although Tottenham are so loose, they always offer a glimmer of hope. One good chance to equalise at 1-0 was wasted by Jack Harrison who cut wide with a half-volley at the far post.

And there was a period of pressure before the break as Everton threatened from a run and Spurs panicked at the back. They were vulnerable when defending from set pieces last season and have worked hard to improve, but they are not a strong team in the air, unlike the visitors.

Maddison was back in his own goal area to make a vital save from Abdoulaye Doucoure in injury time at the end of the first half.

Tottenham briefly failed to generate the same intensity after the break, with Everton briefly fading after the introduction of Jesper Lindstrom and Iliman Ndiaye. Within seconds of coming on, Lindstrom had forced a superb save from Guglielmo Vicario.

Postecoglou reacted quickly, sending on Pape Matar Sarr and Richarlison. Maddison went close with the third free-kick before Romero scored, climbing above James Tarkowski from one of Maddison’s corners.

Son made it four, beating Pickford from a tricky angle after a thrilling run from Micky van de Ven, powering through the centre of the pitch before providing an assist.

Another injury concern for Postecoglou, with Destiny Udogie replaced by Djed Spence. New £65m signing Dominic Solanke missed this game with an ankle injury, although the deeper managerial issues lie with Sean Dyche.
