Happy Thursday, everyone! I hope you’re having a great week so far. I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling a little tired, so I’m going to try to go swimming earlier than usual so I can get as much sleep as possible tonight. I deserve it.

How to play connections

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle every day at midnight. You can play on the News from the New York Times website or Games app.

You are presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to sort them into four groups of four by finding the connections between them. The groups can be things like clickable items, names of participants in a research study, or words preceded by a body part.

There is only one solution to each puzzle, and you have to be careful with words that fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to see if there are any connections between the words.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the hardest. The purple group often includes puns.

Select four words that you think go together and press Submit. If you guess incorrectly, you lose a life. If you’re close to a correct group, you may see a message that you’re one word away from the correct word, but you still have to figure out which one to swap.

If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with some hints, and if you’re really struggling, the Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games you can easily share the results with your friends via social media and group chats.

Once again I was very close to a perfect game, but I’m going for five wins in a row.

First of all, the top row with CHAMPAGNE, SUPER, NOVA and REUNION is a nice reference to the recent Oasis reunion.

I got the yellow one first even though I wasn’t entirely sure OVER would fit. The green ones were straight forward and then.

When I saw CHAMPAGNE and NICE close together, I thought there was a group of French places or words. However, I had mistakenly included NATURE (which is of French origin) instead of REUNION. I realized my mistake and remembered that the latter is a French island in the Indian Ocean. That left the blues for my final triumph.

Here’s a fun fact I just learned when I was looking up the overseas departments and regions of France: the border between French Guiana and Brazil is France’s longest land border with another country. The more you know.
