Play connections

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. Every day you get a new puzzle at midnight. You can play on the NYT website or Games app.

You will be shown a grid of 16 words. Your job is to divide them into four groups of four by discovering the connections between them. The groups can be things like clickable items, names for study participants, or words preceded by a body part.

There is only one solution to each puzzle, and you have to be careful when it comes to words that fit into more than one category. You can play the words in any order so you might see the connections between them.

Each group has a color code. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult. The purple group often uses puns.

Select four words that you think go together and press Send. If you make a guess and you’re wrong, you lose a life. When you’re close to the right group, you might see a message saying you’re just one word away from the right group, but you still need to figure out which one to swap.

I thought this was a relatively lighthearted start to the week. As soon as I saw DOROTHY my thoughts immediately went to The Wizard of Oz and by the time I finished copying the glossary, I had figured out the blues. The yellow colors were also very simple.

I didn’t know what AMBERGRIS was, but I inferred the rest of the vegetables and that one seemed to make the most sense. I didn’t discover the purple group, somewhat embarrassingly. For the record, the cities mentioned are Quito, Rome, Sofia and Seoul.
