    Tigers again shuts out Guardians and takes a 2-1 lead in ALDS

    In front of a record-breaking crowd witnessing their first postseason game at Comerica Park in 10 years and fueled by another strong pitching performance, the Tigers once again shut out the Guardians in a 3-0 victory and are one win away from achieving the ALCS.

    Six Tigers pitchers combined for nine scoreless innings on just six strikeouts, as the Guardians have now been held scoreless for 20 straight innings in this series. Although Cleveland had one more basehit than Detroit on this team, the Tigers managed to score three runs while the Guardians went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

    There were four different times when the Guardians had runners on first and second, but they couldn’t bring any of them home. It wasn’t all pitching, as many Tigers had great defensive plays, like third baseman Matt Vierling jumping up to catch David Fry’s line drive to end the top of the seventh inning, potentially saving several runs .

    The Tigers scored three runs for the second straight game, but this time they did so in different innings. Riley Greene hit an RBI single in the first, then Matt Vierling hit a sacrifice fly in the third. Colt Keith got his first hit of the postseason on a single before moving to second base on a wild pitch and scoring on Spencer Torkelson’s RBI double in the sixth.

    Upper 9th

    Tyler Holton takes the mound to try to get this three final out. He faces Gimenez, who hits a chopper to Torkelson at first base for the first out. Noel hits a grounder to Vierling and the third baseman gets the throw to first base in time for the second out. Comerica gets loud as Hedges comes up for his first at-bat of the day, and Holton makes him swing and miss on a fastball up the middle for the final out. The Tigers are one win away from an ALCS appearance.

    Bottom 8th

    Greene gets a loud catch that dies near the warning track in left field for the first out, then Perez swings and misses on a low curveball. Andy Ibanez pinch-hit for Keith, but hits a fly ball to left-center field as the Tigers are now three outs away from taking a 2-1 series lead.

    Upper 8th

    Vest continues on the mound as Ramirez swings on a 3-2 count and gets a loud fly ball to right field for the first out. Josh Naylor gets a sharp liner to center field, but Meadows gets right on it and makes another out, then Thomas also runs a full count before Vest gets the strike three call for the third out.

    Bottom 7th

    Guardians make a number of changes, including another pitching change, with Andrew Walters and Austin Hedges replacing Martinez as catcher after that wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth. Meadows scores a full count, but swings and misses a fastball for the first out. Jace Jung pinch-hits for Malloy in his first appearance of the series, but Jung pops up with Ramirez in the infield for the second out. Vierling grounded out for the final out of the seventh inning.

    Upper 7th

    Brieske stays in to face Noel, who runs a full count before Brieske gets the strikeout call on a low fastball and that will end his day as Sean Guenther heads to the mound. Angel Martinez pinch-hits for Bo Naylor, but he grounds out to Sweeney, as this time the shortstop makes the throw to first base for the second out. Rocchio starts with a 2-0 count, but Guenther works it back to a full count, but the last pitch is in for a walk. Kwan gets his third goal of the day on a sharp liner that drops to midfield, while Hinch Guenther quickly pulls for Will Vest. Fry almost gets a hit, but Vierling makes a great jumper on third for the final out as the Tigers escape again without giving up a run.

    Keith, Torkelson finally get hits, Tigers extend lead to 3-0

    Eli Morgan comes to the pitch for the Guardians and strikes out Perez on a high fastball. Keith hits a sharp liner to right field, but he won’t challenge Noel’s arm and stays on top for a single, his first hit this postseason. Morgan throws a wild pitch that almost hits Torkelson in the elbow as Keith ascends to second base, after which Torkelson also gets his first hit of the postseason. It goes down the left field line and brings home Keith for an RBI double.

    Sweeney can’t get the third straight hit for the Tigers this inning as he swings and misses a low changeup, but Morgan’s day is over quickly when Cade Smith replaces him on the mound. Smith gets Rogers to strike out on three quick pitches, but the Tigers get another run to extend the lead.

    Upper 6th

    Josh Naylor swung on the first pitch and flew out to Greene, then Thomas grounded out to Vierling, who made the throw to first base in time for the second out. Gimenez throws a strikeout fastball for Brieske’s second strikeout of the day to keep the Guardians off the board.

    Bottom 5th

    Rogers gets back on base on a walk after a full count, then Meadows hit a deep fly ball to Kwan for the first out. We get a substitution from each team, as Tim Herrin replaces Sabrowski on the mound and Justyn-Henry Malloy pinch-hits for Carpenter. Malloy walks after five pitches, as the Tigers now have runners on first and second base with one out. After a mound visit for Herrin, Vierling flies out to left field and all base runners stay where they are. Greene works for a full count as Comerica gets loud, but he hits the ball right to Kwan in left field for the final out.

    Upper 5th

    Bo Naylor pops out to Torkelson at first base in two pitches, then Rocchio and Kwan hit back-to-back singles as AJ Hinch walks to the mound and Hurter’s day is over. Beau Brieske is ready for the next two outs, Fry swings on a low slider for a strikeout. Ramirez gets to a 1-2 count and then flies to midfield as the Tigers once again leave the Guardians scoreless.

    Bottom 4th

    Erik Sabrowski steps up to replace Cobb on the mound. Perez swings a high helicopter curveball to Josh Naylor, but it bounces off the first baseman for an error and Perez moves to second base. Keith draws a full count but swings and misses a slider for the first out. Torkelson swings and misses on a low curveball for back-to-back strikeouts for Sabrowski, then Sweeney hits a ball deep to left field that Kwan can barely reach for the final out.

    Upper 4th

    Hurter stays in for his third inning pitching, as Thomas makes a full count before grounding to Keith for the first out. Gimenez misses the bunt attempt on the first pitch and then pops out to Vierling in shallow left field. Noel swings on the first pitch and lineout to Greene in left field in a fast-paced top of the fourth inning.

    Vierling’s sacrifice fly scores Rogers, Tigers take a 2-0 lead

    The Tigers start the bottom of the third inning with Jake Rogers getting a hit down the left field line for a lead-off double, then Meadows hits a grounder, but which Rogers moves to third base. The Guardians intentionally walk Carpenter, then Vierling is nearly hit by a pitch before hitting a sacrifice fly to left center field that brings home Rogers for the second run. Greene hits a quick line drive that lands in Gimenez’s glove for the final out, but the Tigers have increased their lead and scored in two of the three innings.

    Top 3rd

    Rocchio flies out to left field for the first out, then it’s back to the top of the Guardians’ batting order when Kwan hits a grounder, but Sweeney’s throw to first base is erratic and Kwan reaches second base. Fry connects to a 2-2 count, then Hurter gets a low sweeper into the zone for a strikeout, but the Tigers decide to walk Ramirez intentionally and Josh Naylor hits a grounder to end another Guardians’ chance to win the game to thwart alignment.

    Bottom 2nd

    Colt Keith caught a fly to Kwan in left field for the first out, then struck out Spencer Torkelson again in the series on a low splitter. Sweeney makes a full count, but looks for a sinker for the strikeout as that ends the inning.

    Top 2nd

    On another bullpen day for the Tigers, Brant Hurter comes on for Montero, but he gives up a single to Josh Naylor for the Guardians’ first hit. Lane Thomas swings on the first pitch and gets a sharp single just past shortstop Trey Sweeney as we have runners on first and second with no outs. Andres Gimenez flies out to shallow left field and no one tags, then Jhonkensy Noel drops a fly ball that Meadows has to run a long way to get the second out as Josh Naylor taps to third. Bo Naylor fights for eight pitches but hits a liner right to Perez for the final out.

    Tigers strike first, Greene brings home Meadows for 1-0 lead

    Alex Cobb makes the start for the Guardians, while Parker Meadows starts, leading off with a single for the first hit of the game. Kerry Carpenter gets a big ovation when he comes to the plate, but he flies into center field for the first out. Matt Vierling hits a grounder to shortstop Brayan Rocchio, but he fails to turn the double play, putting Meadows on second base. Riley Greene then singles on a sharp grounder to center field to bring home Meadows for the first run. Wenceel Perez is the fifth batter Cobb has faced in the inning, and he lets Perez fly out to center field for the final out of the inning as the Tigers take a lead into the second inning.

    Top 1st

    Kwan swings on the second pitch and flies out to Riley Greene in left field. Kyle Manzardo grounded out for the second out. Jose Ramirez swings on the first pitch and also pops out to Greene in left field, while Montero gets three outs in just six pitches.

    First pitch

    Comerica Park is full and ready for Game 3 of the ALDS. Keider Montero starts on the mound for the Tigers and Steven Kwan starts for the third straight game. The first pitch is a strike with a fastball and we are on our way.

    Foreplay

    After a dramatic ending to Game 2 helped them tie the American League Divisional Series at 1-1, the Tigers face the Guardians in a pivotal Game 3 at Comerica Park on Wednesday afternoon.

    It was Kerry Carpenter’s three-run home run in the top of the ninth that secured Monday’s 3-0 victory. That win guaranteed two home games in Detroit, the first for the Tigers in this 2024 postseason, as they have won three of their four road games thus far.

    Tarik Skubal, Will Vest and Beau Brieske all contributed pitching nine shutout innings in Game 2. The Tigers will start Keider Montero in Game 3. For the Guardians, they will rely on veteran Alex Cobb to continue their strong pitching, as they have allowed the Tigers to score in just one of the 18 innings played so far in this series.
