Tiafoe and Fritz in US final after walkover from Dimitrov

play

Francis Tiafoe secured a place in his second US Open semi-final late on Tuesday night after opponent Grigor Dimitrov was forced to withdraw due to injury.

Tiafoe, a semifinalist in 2022 at the final major of the season, will face fellow American Taylor Fritz on Friday.

It is the first time in nearly 20 years that two American men have faced each other in the US Open semifinals.

Andy Roddick is the last American to win the US Open in 2003.

What happened to Dimitrov?

Grigor Dimitrov had just fought back and won the second set in a tiebreak when it looked like he was taking a step back.

In the third set he was noticeably slower and had to leave the court to see a trainer due to a groin injury after his opponent Francis Tiafoe had won that set 2-1.

When Dimitrov returned to the court, his body language showed that the injury was not improving. He managed to win only one of the five games before walking to the net himself and losing the match to Tiafoe.

It was the umpteenth time that players dropped out mid-match in this year’s two-week tournament.

What is a pension in tennis?

A walkover or retirement is a situation in which a player automatically advances to the next round without playing. This can happen because the opponent is ill or injured or because of a code of conduct penalty.

Francis Tiafoe’s quarter-final victory over Grigor Dimitrov on Tuesday night will be seen as a piece of cake.

The terms “walkover” and “retirement” are often used interchangeably to indicate that a match is over before it is completed.
