‘This is what boxing needs’ – US fans cheer as Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois PPV price announced

American fight fans are excited that they can finally organize a cheap pay-per-view boxing event.

According to PPV.com, fans in America can buy the IBF heavyweight title fight between Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois on September 21 for just $19.99

That’s a huge price drop. A week earlier, on September 14, Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga would cost fans $89.99 and UFC 306 would cost ESPN+ subscribers $69.99.

Boxing fans across the pond have become accustomed to exorbitant PPV prices, and their delight was evident when they heard about the bargain deal for Joshua vs. Dubois.

Someone tweeted: “I’m definitely buying this now.”

Another said: “Wow! More than a fair deal and I bet the numbers will show that people appreciate it.”

A third person noted: “A solid price might lead to buying and not streaming.”

Someone else wrote: “I wouldn’t go and watch it, but for $20 I might as well.”

If it were up to His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, PPV events with lower prizes would become the norm.

The chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority wants to crack down on illegal streaming and satisfy boxing fans worldwide by lowering PPV prices.

“You mention the PPV, I think this is my next big fight and I would like your advice as well,” he told talkSPORT’s Jordan and White show on Monday morning.

“I dream of a PPV with a good price, so that the fans will be happy and subscribe, so they can watch it legally.

“Usually when I see a high PPV, a lot of people go to watch the match illegally and that is not healthy for the sport of boxing and the platform.

“What I’m going to try to achieve is that our shows in the Riyadh season in England are under £20 and worldwide they’re under $20…

“I would rather have a million fans subscribe and buy the PPV for £20 than less than 500,000 (for £40).

Dana White and HE Turki Alalshikh have very different ideas to combat illegal streaming and say people will be prosecuted

“People go around it illegally because the price is high. In the future, this will not build boxes.

“If I give the fans good fights for a good price, the fan base will grow.”

Alalshikh says his next big boxing match on October 12 will be even cheaper.

He added: “The card that opens the Riyadh season in October (Beterbiev vs Bivol) I have decided to sell for £15 in the UK and $15 worldwide.”
