LAS VEGAS – Joshua Ehrenfeld is a Las Vegas history buff and longtime fan of the company responsible for the implosion of the Tropicana.

The newish Las Vegas resident camped out with a friend in hopes of seeing the demolition of the now-gutted hotel and casino in person.

“What I like about Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) is that if you watch one of their shows, they actually sit there and explain everything. There are a lot of documentaries about when they did The Frontier, when they did Hotels in Miami or when they did the Kingdom, they sat there and explained the technical aspect of it,” Ehrenfeld said.

Over the summer, he said he began documenting the progress on his YouTube page as crews cleared out the hotel and casino and prepared it to implode.

“Even before they announced it, I said they’re probably going to wrap the Paradise Tower inward, pull the cable around it and away from the boulevard and then drop the club tower flat on its face, which is what they’re ultimately going to do” , he said.

He says he has watched on video every hotel the company has imploded.

“My favorite was the Dunes in ’93 when they fired the cannon from Treasure Island to take down the Dunes, which has been my favorite by far.”

Ehrenfeld said he started planning and exploring where he could get the best view the implosion of the hotela year ago.

He and his friend camped out and made signs hours before the historic 2:30 a.m. event.

“We have coolers full of water, soda, Gatorade, a few beers, you know the typical Vegas camp.”

With no official in-person viewing area, the two are aware they may be moved to another location, but they hope to stay near the intersection of Mandalay Bay Road and Las Vegas Blvd to ensure they can seeing history being broken down.
