‘The Deliverance’ Director Worried Film Was Cursed, Held Prayers

“The Deliverance” director Lee Daniels said he held prayer circles during the filming of the horror film based on a true story because he was so afraid the movie was cursed that cast members were hospitalized and his dog died.

The film, which hit Netflix on Friday, tells the story of an Indianapolis family who believed their child was possessed by a demon and said he had crawled up a wall, local station The Indy Star reported in 2014.

During a SiriusXM panel with the cast of “The Deliverance” on Thursday, Daniels said he was aware of the apparent curse on the 1977 horror film “The Exorcist,” so he organized prayer circles on set to prevent supernatural incidents.

“Things happen, and I didn’t want things to happen on my set, but I also needed them to,” Daniels said.

“The Exorcist” also told the story of a possessed child. Its production was accompanied by numerous injuries, accidents and deaths, leading to theories that the child was cursed.

Since then, horror films have tried to borrow influence from “The Exorcist” in some way to gain attention. And it seems that “The Deliverance” is using a similar tactic.

Referring to actor Glenn Close from “The Deliverance,” Daniels continued, “My sister has been my good luck charm in every movie I’ve ever done, and she was in the scene with Glenn in the chemo scene, and she’s the one who gave her attitude in the chemo scene.

“And two days later, after she was in the chemo scene, she was diagnosed with lung cancer, literally. My dog died on set.”

Mo’Nique, who plays a social worker in the 2024 film, said she was hospitalized after filming a scene with the demon.

“Mr. Daniels had me do a scene, okay? And we’re outside. It was just, the demon was supposed to be on top of the building, so they kept blowing this up… I mean, at one point I was like, ‘Lee, do we have to have this shit, because I can’t breathe,'” Mo’Nique said.

She added: “So when I finished, yeah, my thyroid was a big… I mean, it was just sick. Oh, honey. I was like, ‘What is this shit?’ There was a lot going on with ‘The Deliverance.'”
