Since 2014, Tether has recovered over $108.8 million worth of USDT from criminal activity with the help of over 145 law enforcement agencies.

According to a statement from Tether CEO Paolo Ardoni, “Tether remains steadfast in its mission to support global law enforcement efforts in combating the illicit use of cryptocurrency.” He added that Tether fully cooperates with law enforcement agencies in the fight against fraud, and condemns the misuse of USDT or any other cryptoasset for illegal activities.

In a recent scam known as the “pig slaughter,” Tether helped the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) seize approximately $5 million of its Tether token from scammers who defrauded victims by posing as romantic partners and then ran off with their money.

Criminals engaged in these types of practices usually meet their victims online and spend a lot of time gaining their trust so that they can convince them to make larger investments.

Tether sees this as a positive victory, noting that the seizure of funds “marks an important victory in the ongoing fight against cyber fraud.”

Tether further announced that it plans to collaborate with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Secret Service to effectively combat cryptocrime.
