Tennessee Titans trade quarterback Malik Willis

Tennessee quarterback Malik Willis threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter on Sunday, leading the Titans to a 30-27 preseason victory over the New Orleans Saints.

On Monday, the Auburn alum was on the road again — this time without the Tennessee offense. The Titans traded Willis to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Neither team has announced the trade, but it was confirmed Monday by ESPN, NFL Network and the Green Bay Gazette.

Jordan Love will be Green Bay’s starting quarterback in 2024. But neither of the other two quarterbacks on the Packers’ preseason roster has thrown a pass in an NFL regular-season game. Sean Clifford was a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and Michael Pratt was a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

In preparation for his third NFL season, Willis competed with newly acquired Mason Rudolph to serve as a replacement for Will Levis at Tennessee.

During three preseason appearances, Rudolph completed 31 of 49 passes for 365 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, while Willis completed 20 of 27 passes for 205 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Rudolph was sacked once and Willis was sacked five times. Willis was Tennessee’s leading rusher in the preseason with 101 yards on 11 carries. Rudolph had 16 yards on eight carries.

Describing Rudolph on Monday as “the epitome of consistency,” Titans coach Brian Callahan said, “Malik really showed off his skills in Sunday’s game. I thought he played well. He made some nice throws on video. You still see his athleticism with the ball in his hands.”

Callahan didn’t mention the trade, but he did speak about the need to choose between keeping Rudolph or Willis due to NFL roster rules.

The NFL had planned to allow teams to keep a third quarterback on the practice squad who could be promoted to active status if needed without restriction in 2024. Each NFL team can promote two practice squad players to active status for each game, but no player can be promoted more than three times. The three-time limit would not apply to quarterbacks under the NFL plan.

However, the NFL Players Association rejected that proposal, meaning the game will proceed under the 2023 rules, which allow each team to field a 49th player as an emergency third quarterback on game day, but that player must be on the 53-man active roster.

That puts teams like Tennessee in a dilemma again, as they don’t want to commit three spots on the 53-man regular-season roster to quarterbacks.

“It’s not a free spot,” Callahan said. “It’s a roster spot, and it’s a real one. You have to take them at 53 to get that emergency quarterback. I would love it if they made it 54 or 47 on game day or whatever it is. You could just take a third quarterback, and they could go into the game when you need them to go into the game. That would be great, but that’s not how it works.”
