The 2024 Paris Olympics will see the return of 3×3 basketball after its debut at the Tokyo Olympics. The men’s and women’s pools will each feature eight teams, with Team USA represented in both tournaments for the first time.

Team USA won gold in women’s 3×3 basketball at the last Summer Games and returns with an all-new lineup. The men’s 3×3 basketball team makes its Olympic debut this year behind former college basketball star Jimmer Fredette.

History in the making: Which Team USA medal milestones should we watch for at the Paris Olympics?

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3×3 basketball rules are used for the Olympic Games:

  • Teams: Two teams of three players with one substitute
  • Court: Half of a FIBA ​​regulation basketball court
  • Scoring: One point inside the arc, two points outside the arc
  • Playing time: 10 minutes or the first team to score 21 points
  • Shot clock: 12 seconds

Here is each stage of the tournament:

  • Billiards: All teams play each other once
  • Play-along games: The top two teams advance to the semi-finals, while the numbers 3 through 6 play each other in play-in games. Number 3 plays against number 6 and number 4 takes on number 5.
  • Semi-finals: Winners of the play-in game will face the numbers 1 and 2.
  • Bronze medal match: Losers semi-final
  • Gold Medal Game: Semi-final winners
