Dallas and Richardson Police Continue Investigation into Freeway Chase and Shooting

NORTH TEXAS — A suspect has died after shots were fired during a high-speed chase during rush hour in Dallas on Monday.

The chase began on Arapaho Road in Richardson when officers spotted the vehicle of a man wanted for questioning in a Kaufman County murder case, Richardson police sources said. The chase ended on the southbound Central Expressway service road between Midpark and High Five.

Witnesses said they heard gunshots around 3:30 p.m. and ran for cover. The suspect fired multiple shots into an officer’s patrol car, the Richardson Police Department said.

Richardson Police Chief Gary Tittle said the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A woman in the suspect’s vehicle was injured and three children in the vehicle were unharmed, Richardson police said. Their relationships to each other and the suspect are unknown.

Tittle said the suspect shot and wounded the woman in his car twice. She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The unharmed children were also taken to hospital for observation.

Tittle said none of the bullets that hit anyone in the car came from his officers. Tittle said only one officer fired his weapon and he has been placed on administrative leave.

Both Richardson and Dallas police closed several major roads and blocked traffic during the investigation.

A nearby taco shop, La Casita Taqueria, shared footage from its security camera, which showed the vehicle parked next to the Richardson police when the shots were heard.

“We saw there was some kind of chase with the police, and they started shooting at the stop sign and we were scared inside,” said Diana Medina, who works at La Casita Taqueria. “We tried to hide because we didn’t know if the bullets were going to hit us or what.”

Dallas police are overseeing the investigation. Police have not yet identified the suspect.
