CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Let’s face it: Any day with your dog is International Dog Day, but August 26 is the official day to celebrate it.

International Dog Day — sometimes called National Dog Day — is now in its 20th year. It was first celebrated by Colleen Paige, a pet lifestyle expert and author, as a way to raise awareness for dogs in need of adoption.

August 26th marks the day that Paige’s family adopted their first dog from an animal shelter.

There are several shelters and rescues in the Charlotte area, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control, the Humane Society of Charlotte, and of course Petfinder, ASPCA, and 24Petconnect. These will help you find nearby shelters, rescues, and pets for adoption.
