Stephen Colbert slams Trump over Truth Social DNC ‘fact check’ – and a specific post about Walz

Stephen Colbert couldn’t resist criticizing Donald Trump for his so-called “fact check” of Kamala Harris’ speech at the Democratic National Convention.

On Thursday night, as Harris accepted the Democratic nomination, Trump gave live commentary on Truth Social. During her 38-minute speech, he posted more than 50 messages.

In one of his many live “fact checks,” Trump took on Tim Walz, criticizing the fact that the Democratic vice presidential nominee was not, in fact, a high school coach, but an assistant coach.

It wasn’t exactly a gotcha moment for the former Republican president, and Colbert couldn’t resist mocking him for it in his own way. The Late Show live from Chicago that evening.

Colbert gave his best Trump impression, reading Trump’s Truth Social post: “Walz was an ASSISTANT coach, not a COACH.”

“Oh my God,” Colbert said, jokingly slapping his head as if the penny had dropped.

“Oh my god… of course, he was an assistant coach. Do you know what that means?

“Walz was only qualified to be a vice president of sorts, if you think about it, good idea… good idea,” he added as the crowd laughed.

In his opening monologue, Colbert also joked about Walz, while also discussing other events at the DNC.

“To honor the suffrage movement, many of the delegates and speakers at the time wore all white, while Tim Walz honored suffrage by wearing all white,” he joked.

Another joke that went down well with the live audience was his theory about why the DNC draws more TV viewers than the RNC.

“One (reason) could be the speakers… The second night of the DNC featured Michelle and Barack Obama, while the second night of the RNC closed with Lara Trump and Marco Rubio,” he said.

“That’s like saying, sorry, we’re out of Coke, but is diarrhea okay?”

The DNC drew more than 20 million viewers for the third night in a row on Wednesday, according to ratings released by Nielsen. The third night of the RNC, by comparison, drew 3 million fewer viewers, compared to 18 million viewers in July when J.D. Vance gave his first major speech as the Republican vice presidential nominee in Milwaukee.

Colbert also referenced Harris’ line “Do you think you just fell out of a coconut tree?”, which has been turned into countless memes and become a hit among Gen Z.

“I don’t know about you, but after a week of live shows and seeing all that energy, joy and purpose tonight, I feel like I just fell out of a coconut tree,” he said.

He finished his joke on a more serious note, adding, “And here’s the context… moments ago, the Democrats formally nominated the first woman of color to ever run on a major political party ticket: Kamala Harris. There you have it, write that down in your history books.”
