Steelers gave Russell Wilson a ‘petty game ball’ after beating Broncos

When the 2024 schedule was announced, many people paid attention to Pittsburgh’s trip to Denver in Week 2, as it gave quarterback Russell Wilson a chance to face off against his former Broncos teammates.

Things turned out differently, however. Wilson missed his second straight game with a calf injury and Justin Fields quarterbacked a 13-6 victory that moved the Steelers to 2-0 on the season.

While Wilson was merely a spectator upon his return to Denver, head coach Mike Tomlin and the rest of the Steelers were concerned after the victory with the team’s tough experiences over the past two years and his midseason dismissal.

“I think we all know Russ did a little dirty “last year,” Fields said, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com. “So I know he wishes he could have played in this game today, but it’s great that he got the win. He got a petty game ball.”

Wilson’s injury derailed plans to start him this season and it remains to be seen whether he’ll return to the position. Fields’ numbers weren’t dismal on Sunday and the Steelers failed to move the ball in the second half, but penalties played a role in those outcomes and the Steelers won both games despite scoring just 31 points. Those wins go along with Wilson’s health as factors the team must consider as it contemplates a change at the most important position on offense.
