‘Star Wars Outlaws’ Reviews Are In, and They’re Good

One of the bigger releases this fall in a somewhat parsimonious year is Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws, a single-player entry in the series that shakes off the linearity of Jedi Fallen Order and, uh, Jedi. Instead, you play a Solo-esque rogue fighting his way through open-world maps, and now reviews for the game are in.

They’re pretty good, at least so far. Not great, but good enough for a lot of Star Wars fans, probably.

At the time of writing, Star Wars Outlaws currently holds a Metacritic score of 76 on PS5, where most of the reviews (45) are coming in. It holds a 77 on Xbox (12 reviews), and a 77 on PC (17 reviews, though one of those is a distant outlier with a 3/10).

On the good old “anything is between a 6-10” video game scale, a mid to high 70 is solid. The “truly great” metric is usually 85+ though, by industry standards, like it or not. And 90+ and you’re in contention for GOTY. These are loose rules, and games in the 70s are certainly popular. These are good scores, and about what most of Ubisoft’s recent Assassin’s Creed games have gotten, if not better than some.

What do critics say? A selection of the scores:

  • Dextero (8/10) – “While Star Wars: Outlaws soars thanks to its spectacular open-world design, letting you go wild across multiple gigantic planets, all brought to life with immense attention to detail, a safe and somewhat by-the-book story keeps the package from being a top-tier package.”
  • Washington Post (7.5/10) – “A stark reminder of why the Ubisoft formula became so influential, reliable and popular.”
  • IGN (7/10) – “Star Wars Outlaws is a fun intergalactic heist adventure with plenty of exploration, but it’s hampered by simple stealth, repetitive combat, and a few too many bugs at launch.”
  • VGC (6/10) – “Star Wars Outlaws is a pulpy, Uncharted-style adventure that doesn’t quite live up to its potential. Kay and Nix lead a great cast through a well-paced, snappy story, but the game’s Reputation system and the Syndicate storyline in general feel undercooked.”

So, solid, but not a surprise critical hit. It’s a Star Wars game, it’s not a disaster, so it’ll sell. But it does feel like just another Ubisoft release in terms of these scores and the pros and cons. I’m curious to see what fans think, at least the ones who aren’t going to war with the game over a woman’s haircut they don’t like.

I haven’t played a review copy, so I’m starting early access this week. I’m looking forward to seeing what it has to offer.
