Sri Lankan cricket awaits overhaul as govt initiates constitutional draft

The Sri Lankan Cabinet has decided to instruct its legal advisor to work on a draft new constitution for Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), based on recommendations from a committee of retired judges.

The panel, known as the ‘Chitrasiri Committee’, proposed a structure whereby the SLC would be governed by an 18-member board of directors.

The government stepped in to reform the structure when the then Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe dismissed the current SLC board and replaced it with an interim committee.

Ranasinghe’s decision resulted in Sri Lanka’s ICC membership being suspended and the SLC losing the right to host the Under-19 World Cup, which was subsequently held in South Africa.

The current election process for SLC management has been widely criticized for the excessive number of votes being bought to maintain the status quo at the head of the organization.

The proposed new law aims to establish term limits while changing the voting structure to ensure fairer governance.
