Southwest braces for triple-digit heat wave

Topline

Scorching temperatures are expected in several cities in the southwestern United States this week, according to the National Weather Service, as cities brace for one of the last heat waves that could break records in a summer of high temperatures.

Key Facts

The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for much of the Southwest, including Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Phoenix. The warning will remain in effect through Friday night. Thursday is expected to be the hottest day of the week.

The National Weather Service said several daily records could be broken “through early this weekend,” but it did not specify where the records might be recorded.

According to the National Weather Service, much of Los Angeles will experience temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Parts of the San Fernando Valley have a 20 percent chance of temperatures reaching 115 degrees Fahrenheit on Thursday.

According to a local ABC station, temperatures in Phoenix are expected to be between 102 and 113 degrees Fahrenheit on Thursday afternoon, which could break the region’s record for the most days over 110 degrees Fahrenheit in a year. The current temperature is 54 degrees Fahrenheit.

Temperatures in Las Vegas on the Strip are expected to reach around 106 degrees Fahrenheit. In Death Valley, temperatures could even reach 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

The National Weather Service expects the risk of heat-related health problems to be greatest on Thursday, as many areas in the Southwest are at high or extreme heat risk.

Main background

This week’s heat wave coincides with forecasts earlier this year that called for above-average summer temperatures in the Southwest, Midwest, Northeast and Great Plains. A July heat wave brought sustained record temperatures to the Southwest, which recorded a string of nine days with highs of at least 120 degrees, according to The Washington Post, which noted that Las Vegas had its hottest summer on record this year, averaging 96.2 degrees. Record daily high temperatures were matched or surpassed in July in places like Philadelphia, Fort Lauderdale, Boston and Raleigh. Globally, July was nearly the hottest month on record
