Social media reacts to deaths of New Jersey residents Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau

Heartbreaking news in the hockey world this morning: New Jersey native and Blue Jackets player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were killed Thursday night in a bicycle accident in Oldmans Township, near their home in Salem County.

Johnny and Matthew were reportedly in the area tonight for their sister’s wedding.

Known as “Johnny Hockey,” he put hockey in South Jersey on the map when he graduated from Gloucester Catholic High School in 2011. He then attended Boston College, where as a freshman he scored a goal in the national championship game during the Golden Eagles’ 4-1 win over Ferris State University.

Johnny Gaudreau was then selected 104th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2011 NHL Draft. He had spent the past two seasons as a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets, signing a free agency contract in 2022 to be closer to his family in the Garden State.

This is how social media is reacting to the sudden and tragic passing of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau:
