Sky vs Aces Predictions, Picks & Odds – 9-3

Angel Reese just set the WNBA single-season rebounding record and meets runaway MVP favorite A’ja Wilson, and our free WNBA picks don’t think the Chi-Barbie can dominate the glass. Read more below.

The WNBA’s best player has been scoring points of late, with A’ja Wilson hitting 40 twice in the Las Vegas Aces’ last three games. Meanwhile, Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese just set the WNBA record for rebounds in a season, breaking Sylvia Fowles’ record from 2018 in two games fewer.

While my Sky vs. Aces predictions may be indicative of the theme of this article, my WNBA predictions may not be what you expect for Tuesday, September 3.

Sky vs Aces Predictions

My best chance
A’ja Wilson Over 12.5 rebounds (+106 at FanDuel)

My analysis
A’ja Wilson is saving the Las Vegas Aces’ season and keeping their three-peat hopes alive. They’ve won three of their last four, thanks in no small part to Wilson averaging 32.25 points and 14.25 rebounds per game over the past week.

Las Vegas needs every win it can get, just one game in the standings away from losing home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs. This chase for back-to-back-to-back titles would be tough enough; not having home-field advantage in the first round would only add to that burden.

Wilson has been more consistently dominant on the glass this week than she has on the scoreboard, since the Olympic break and, frankly, all season. She’s outscored the lofty prop three times in the last four games and is averaging 12 rebounds since the Olympic break. Let’s argue this trend a bit further: Wilson has grabbed 13 or more boards in eight of her last 12 games, averaging 13.8 snags in that span.

You might be hesitant to trust anyone on the glass against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky. All due respect to Reese — and anyone who disrespects her clearly hasn’t been watching the rookie’s stellar development this season — Wilson is still going to rack up plenty of rebounds tonight.

These teams have met three times this season. Wilson has grabbed 14 and 18 rebounds in the last two, including one a week ago to start this strong streak. She should always be relied upon to find missed shots, if only because she dictates those terms in the Las Vegas rotation. Wilson has grabbed 19.9 percent of available rebounds in her 1,096 minutes played this season. Among Aces players with more than 300 minutes played, only Kiah Stokes (572 minutes) has found more than 9 percent of available rebounds, with a strong 14.8 percent.

That’s where playing the Sky plays to Wilson’s strengths. Chicago is No. 10 in offensive rating over the last two months — effectively a month of games, well before the Olympic break. In that same period, the Sky have made just 42.8 percent of their shots, No. 9 in the WNBA.

There will be a plethora of missed shots in Las Vegas on Tuesday night, and no one, not even Angel Reese, is better at collecting them than A’ja Wilson.

Reese doesn’t get enough credit. In 32 games, she’s grabbed 418 rebounds, a WNBA single-season record. Some critics argue she did it in a longer season, and yes, this WNBA season will be 40 games. Will be. Reese hasn’t played them all yet. The record of 404 was set by Sylvia Fowles in 34 games in 2018.

Reese reached that record in such a short time because she has been a force since finally getting a breather during the Olympics. Reese and fellow rookie Caitlin Clark had been playing meaningful basketball since November. They needed a moment to catch their breath. They were exhausted. Since that break, Reese has grabbed 19 or more rebounds in four of nine games, with a fifth game at 15.

But in her three games against Wilson and the Aces, Reese had “only” grabbed 11 boards and 10 boards compared to her 22-rebound performance last week. This is Wilson’s chance for revenge.

And since Las Vegas is such a healthy favorite and still motivated to place, Las Vegas should decide this game early and maintain the lead regardless of how Reese plays.

  • Distribution:Chicago +11.5 | Las Vegas -11.5
  • Moneyline: Chicago +490 | Las Vegas-750
  • Over/Under: More than 164.5 | Less than 164.5

Sky vs Aces spread and Over/Under analysis

  • This spread opened late on Sunday, with Las Vegas as the favorite at 11.5, and rose to -12 and even -13 at some bookmakers on Monday afternoon.
  • The Aces had lost nine games in a row against the spread before winning their last two games. Maybe they were finally back to the level they expected from the spread, maybe.
  • The total opened at 164.5 on Sunday evening and rose to 166 on Monday afternoon, in line with the spread.

Sky vs Aces trend

Chicago is on a six-game losing streak, going just 1-6 since the Olympic break. Part of that can be attributed to trading Mabrina Mabrey during the break, part to Chennedy Carter sitting out due to COVID, and part, perhaps, to Sky seeing an opportunity to bow out of the WNBA playoffs in pursuit of UConn superstar Paige Bueckers.
