Sinner fights past Paulus, prepares for US Open clash with Medvedev

NEW YORK — Top-seeded Jannik Sinner survived a tough battle against Tommy Paul, beating the American 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5), 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open on Monday.

Sinner, who hit 10 aces in a bustling Arthur Ashe Stadium, is the only man to reach the last eight of all four majors this year.

Paul, supported by a boisterous home crowd, produced some of his best tennis performances, but his hopes of ending the 21-year drought in the US men’s Grand Slams were dashed by Sinner’s precision play.

The Italian will now face 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev.
