World number one Jannik Sinner reached his first US Open semi-final on Wednesday with a four-set victory over 2021 champion and two-time runner-up Daniil Medvedev.

Sinner, who is looking to win his second major of the season after the Australian Open, won 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 and will face Britain’s Jack Draper, who is ranked 25th, for a place in the final.

The 23-year-old Sinner is the only top 10 player to reach the semi-finals. Taylor Fritz, ranked 12, will face her American compatriot Frances Tiafoe, ranked 20, in the other last-four match on Friday.

Italy’s Sinner defeated Medvedev from two sets down to win the Australian Open title, but the Russian got revenge in another five-setter at Wimbledon.

“It was very tough, I knew it would be very physical,” said Sinner.

“It was strange in the first two sets, whoever took the break started rolling.”

Sinner said he was looking forward to the match against Draper.

“We are good friends off the court. He is having a great tournament and hasn’t lost a set yet.”

Sinner won the first set on Wednesday with a pair of breaks, with the Russian making 15 unforced errors, compared to six for the Italian.

However, number five Medvedev turned it around with a double break and levelled the quarter-finals.

In an exciting battle, Sinner managed to return the favor by winning the third set in just 30 minutes.

Medvedev patiently created two break points in the sixth game of the fourth set, both of which were stopped.

This allowed Sinner to take the initiative with the decisive break and bring the score to 4-3, before securing the victory.

Medvedev had to save 10 of 15 break points in the tie, while his dream of reaching a 10th Grand Slam semi-final was undermined by 57 unforced errors.
